In Mali, almost 1 in 25 babies are at risk of dying in their first month. Soon after deployment to Hummingbird’s Yanfolila Gold Project we realised that local babies were dying unnecessarily. Nurses and midwives didn’t have the skills needed to provide much needed support in the crucial first moments after birth.
We began teaching local healthcare workers how to identify a sick newborn and how to provide resuscitation, helping the baby take it’s first breaths. The clinics we worked with had all the necessary equipment but it had lain unused for years as no one had taught the teams how to properly use. Within a few days we were hearing success stories and each week at our community teaching sessions they tell us about the babies that would have previously died.
