STUDENT ESSAY COMPETITION 2021
Critical Care International (CCI) is proud to have launched our inaugural student essay competition.
The aim of this competition is to widen discussion amongst healthcare professionals on matters of global importance, to explore challenges to healthcare provision worldwide and to better understand how to implement lessons learnt.
This year the competition will focus on the future of global health provision and we want to hear how you foresee the discipline evolving over the next decade as a result of COVID-19, climate change and emerging technologies.
The essay competition forms the first part of a range of CCI opportunities for medical students who have an interest in global health and remote medicine. Full details of the essay titles, submission parameters and judging criteria are given below.
THE QUESTIONS
Essay topics (one submission is allowed per applicant):
- Discuss the long-term impact of COVID-19 on any element of global health provision.
- How will climate change affect the health of the global population over the next decade?
- Explore the use of one technology that could significantly improve healthcare globally in low and middle-income countries.
WHO CAN ENTER?
The essay competition is open to medical, nursing and paramedic students at recognised teaching institutions in the UK. Submissions will open on Wednesday the 7th April 2021 and will close at midnight on Monday the 31st May.
Prizes
- The winner will receive:
- a monetary prize of £300
- a free one-year membership from the Faculty of Remote, Rural and Humanitarian Healthcare (FRRHH).
- Both runners-up will receive a monetary prize of £150.
- All three winners will have the chance to publish their work on the CCI website and to discuss their essays with a panel of CCI doctors.
Essay specifications
- The essay submission must be anonymous; it should not include acknowledgements, names or institutions that could identify the applicant.
- Applicants must be either medical, nursing or paramedic students, currently enrolled in a full-time UK university course at the time of submission.
- The essay must be a maximum of 2000 words, including any titles and in-text references. Not included in the word count are the cover page and bibliography.
- The essay needs to be written in English with references done in the Harvard referencing style.
- The winner will be chosen by a panel comprised of CCI doctors and members of our operations team, as well as our current medical student intern.
- The choice of winners will be based on a holistic judgement of the quality of application, including originality of content, style of writing and ability to enthuse readers.
- Only one submission may be made per applicant.
- The essay must be original work written in whole by the applicant.
- Essays submitted after the deadline will not be considered.
- Information about the applicant (e.g., name, age, course and year of study) will be held and used by Critical Care International for the purpose of awarding the prize. CCI will contact the winners directly and essays will be published on the CCI website.

The Faculty of Remote, Rural and Humanitarian Healthcare (FRRHH) is a global professional home for remote, rural and humanitarian healthcare professionals. The faculty aims to support the needs of individuals and organisations working across the public, private and third sectors in both their domestic and international practice. The faculty aims to create a professional community by offering routes for sharing best practice, peer to peer support, career guidance as well as professional standard setting and educational activity. Our primary objective is to “improve the health outcomes of individuals living and working in remote, rural, austere and life-threatening areas of the world”.
